Hi BBB -- Depends on your budget and tolerance. If you can afford $100 plus a night and want elegance, any of the bed and breakfast inns would be fine, especially gay-operated The Villa. a 5 minute walk from the beach and the bars of Seabreeze Blvd. If you're willing to rough it, you can try the Streamline, an Art Deco landmark that has seen better days. Ask for one of the ground-floor rooms, which have been renovated. Some describe it as a "beach bum" atmosphere. The rooftop bar is worth a visit for the view and is fairly busy on weekends. Just about any of the beachfront hotels and motels would be gay-friendly. Daytona is a fairly tolerant place.

Thank you, President Obama, for finally getting around to endorsing equality for all. It took you four years, too late for the GLBT couples of Florida and North Carolina. Now, how about backing up your words with some actions, such as reforming Social Security to extend its safety net to gay couples?

On a related note, the Bankrate.com web site has an excellent how-to article that explains various ways for married couples to maximize their Social Security benefits. But I posted this footnote:
---0---
To Bankrate.com: Thanks for Jennie Phipps' detailed story on the various technical strategies for collecting maximum Social Security benefits as a married couple. The options are quite amazing.
However, there was one glaring omission. She didn't mention that tens of thousands of legally married couples in the U.S. are denied all marriage-related benefits of Social Security because they happen to be same-gender couples. Although they are considered legally married couples in the states of NY, Massachusetts, Iowa, New Hampshire, etc., the federal Defense of Marriage Act continues to treat them as singles. Many of us ardently hope the federal courts will strike down this discrimination within the next year or two, but many of us seniors have already lost thousands of dollars in forgone benefits. Worse yet is the insecurity of knowing that when we die, our surviving spouse will have to fend for himself or herself, unable to get widow/widower benefits. As a result, many of us spend quite a bit extra on life insurance and investments to obtain the safety net that the government denies us.
It would be helpful if Bankrate.com brings this to the attention of the public.

While "Boys in the Band" gave me my first glimpse of the gay subculture in New York, I would say "Brokeback Mountain" had the greatest emotional impact. The searing final scene of Ennis fingering his dead lover's jacket, and thinking of a life together they might have had, is such a powerful statement against closeted life. Cultural historians someday may credit the film as a milestone of hetero acceptance of gay love.

Put some pressure on the cruise lines. All Baltic Cruises have a two day stop in St. Petersburg. We are scheduled on an Atlantis cruise this summer and will boycott the stop and stay on board. Rather spend our tourist dollars in countries that welcome us than oppress us. Personally, I am having difficulty understanding why Atlantis, a gay travel organization, would not immediately cancel that port and reschedule another. Could it be that they are more interested in making money and their bottom line than doing the right and moral thing.

Hi "Candy" -- Yes, New Church Family will have a service Sunday at 10 a.m. at the blue Copytronics Building, 815-B Beville Road, Daytona -- same time & place every Sunday. We have been around for 25 years, but, alas, we are still one of Daytona's best-kept secrets. The Internet is helping us get the word out, and we do have newcomers at just about every service. Our congregation is predominantly GLBT, but we have several straight members too, and we do not quiz people about their orientation. It's all part of God's great creation, so why worry about it? Give us a try, I think you'll like us.

Hi, I am a local here in the Daytona area for many years and have just come across this church info. I have been attending a church for 20 yrs but it is not a Gay friendly church an I’m wondering if I really belong there now that I’ve recently decided to “come out” as a lesbian. It kind of feels like an old pair of shoes that just don’t quite fit anymore. Very uncomfortable. Also, with my “new life” I find myself without many friends all of a sudden and hope to meet new people who are like minded. Church is not new to me but a “Gay friendly” church is. I really believe this is the direction I need to go in. Will there be a service this next Sunday (March 18rh) perhaps? If so I would really like to attend. Looking forward to finding a congregation whom I can feel comfortable with. Thanx and hope to see you soon.
